Volunteers get academy spruced up

When the students at Levan Scott Academy come back from spring break, they might wonder what happen to their school.

The bare walls, chipping paint, dirty windows and bare landscape of the school at 950 E. Fairfax Ave. will be no more.

"There are going to be some very surprised people," said Toni Murray, a first-grade teacher at Scott Academy.

About 170 volunteers swarmed the school all day Saturday to clean and refurbish the building and landscape.

The event was part of the Indiana State Education Association's "Outreach to Teach" project.

"We are here to give back to the community and be role models for students," Marilynn Edwards, one of the project's committee members said.

The third annual event, which works to improve the school environment for students, is paid for through donations from universities and the Indiana State Teachers Association.

Inspiration for art lives in everyday landscape for Hale

Matisse and Picasso both claim that post-impressionist artist, Paul Cezanne is "the father of us all," meaning that he is credited for bridging the gab from 19th Century Impressionism to 20th Century cubism. After much success, Cezanne commented, "art is a harmony parallel with nature."

As Dr. Carolyn Hale walks around her property pointing at various forms of plant life that she finds inspiring, she also makes a comment similar to Cezanne's.

"Art of the everyday world is influenced by landscape," Hale said. "I'm drawn to the different types of landscape and what nature can teach us."

Hale, professor of communication at Missouri Southern, is also a dedicated artist.

"I've always been interested in art, even as a child," Hale said.

Beautification of downtown Kingston to continue

Patrick Wong, chief executive officer of the Kingston City Centre Improvement Committee (KCIC), says in short order downtown Kingston will get a facelift.

"We are going to be doing some beautification work," he tells The Sunday Gleaner. We are going to be putting up some signs at the various points of interest; we are going to be doing some landscaping and will be putting in some trash receptacles," he adds.

Prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup, areas of downtown Kingston cried out for help, which came at the eleventh hour in anticipation of the flood of visitors expected to arrive for the tournament.

St William Grant Park

There were talks of a facelift for St. William Grant Park and landscaping of the area along the Kingston Harbour. These plans fell through; all that happened was a mere wash down of St.

The lawn outside Clark Hall on Thursday was the scene of the first ...

Contestants built protective casings for their eggs, which were then dropped from 50 feet. Winners were determined on how little the egg was damaged, the creativity of the team and their 'egg-quipment.'

Designs for the 'egg-quipment' ranged from a papier-mache baby to a volcano filled with baking soda.

The winners of Thursday's event were freshman economics major Matthew Brown, junior biology major Josh Noble and freshman pre-major Jake Slaton of Phi Kappa Sigma.

The team won a trip to the Flugtag '07 contest in Nashville, Tenn., and a wakeboard from KISSFM, said Matthew Appleby, field marketing manager for the Red Bull event.

Second-place winners won the teams combined weight in Red Bull- roughly 500 pounds. The third-place winners won half of the teams weight in Red Bull - roughly 230 pounds, Appleby said.

A BRITISH VERSION OF `NAKED GUN' GENRE Police parody is surely ...

Rating: R (for brief nudity, strong language, violence and alcohol abuse) Running time: 1:45. The stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Billie Whitelaw. Theater: Patton Creek, Summit.

Clocking in at just more than two hours, "Hot Fuzz" runs a bit long for a cop spoof, but it is also one of the funniest law enforcement comedies this side of "The Naked Gun."

The film is a follow-up to the imaginative zombie saga "Shaun of the Dead," reuniting director Edgar Wright with stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Their ambitions yield mixed results this time around. The picture plays more like a collection of sketches than a linear crime story.

The fish-out-of-water tale follows a tough, tactical London constable (Pegg) who is reassigned to a rural village, where he's teamed with a slacker officer (Frost).
