CENTURY GARDENS HIRES AWARD-WINNING LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Although new to Century Gardens, Lewis is no stranger to the Kingwood area. Hes designed and built landscapes for some of the areas most prestigious homes. Three years ago, Lewis was the landscape architect for the Dickard family home in the beautiful, gated community of Kings Lake Estates. The stately residence sits on a slope overlooking Lake Houston. Lewis admits that addressing the sloping elevation and dense shade was a challenge.

He first interviewed the homeowners to determine their landscape needs. In the backyard, that included multiple patios down the hillside, a play area, a walkway to the lake, a deck on the shoreline bulkhead, an outdoor kitchen, fountain feature and a boathouse.

Its real important to get to know clients first, explains Lewis about the design process.

Review: Tale of two trucks

I'm not really much of a truck guy. I don't use one for work, I don't have a boat or trailer to haul, and I wouldn't buy one as my regular car.

Oh, yes, like many people, I wish I had one stashed somewhere in a garage so I could use it for the truck things that always seem to crop up, things like moving or gardening or home improvement. And, in fact, I have discussed with some of my neighbors - only semi-seriously - that we should pool our funds and buy a truck to share. But seriously, I know a few people who prefer driving a truck to a car; I'm just not one of them.

Every now and then, though, I get a truck or two in my job as an auto reviewer, but not as many as some of the other reviewers since my column is called " Executive Wheels." Someone once told me, however, that deep down inside all guys have a little " truck person" in them, and there was a time in my life when I thought having a pickup would be the end-all, be-all.

Limestone gardeners tend yards to grow green Event to help fund 3 ...

From his porch, Witty can relax in the coolness of his shade garden and listen to the water trickle from his goldfish pond.

That's the peace.

But he can also spy on goldfinches defending the corner bird feeder dangling from a branch. He can laugh at the squirrels unable to reach the center yard bird feeder hanging from a pole.

"My wife greases it," Witty said, "so the little fellows get halfway up and fall back down."

In the early mornings, he can enjoy breakfast while watching baby rabbits overcome their skittishness and romp and eat.

Those are the battles he finds in nature.

Witty gets such enjoyment from his shade garden that he wants to share it with others. Witty is a member of the Limestone County Master Gardeners Association.

The group is holding its annual plant sale Saturday at the Farmers Market.
